How to Help Children Build Lasting Habits and Routines

Attach a new habit to something that already happens reliably — after breakfast, before the bath. The existing routine becomes the cue.

Keep the number of active goals low. One or two is plenty for younger children; three or four is a reasonable ceiling for teens.

Expect regressions during illness, travel and big transitions. A quiet reset is far more effective than starting over from scratch.
